Tenancy Training

This training programme is designed for people moving into independent accommodation who may not have any experience of living on their own or who have had problems in the past.

The aim of the programme is to help you understand fully your responsibilities as a tenant and when and how to seek help. It also gives you a realistic idea of what living on your own is like and what you can expect. It covers the following topics:

  • Claiming benefits
  • Paying bills and budgeting
  • Tenancy management
  • Dealing with rent and arrears
  • Dealing with debt
  • Health and safety

The training is delivered over three days with each day lasting between 3 and 4 hours. Foundation Housing will provide money for travel and refreshments while you are on the course.

Once you have completed the course you will be awarded a certificate to say you have been on it. This might help you to access accommodation with people other than Foundation Housing. If you have applied to Foundation Housing for accommodation it is likely that you will be asked to go on the course before you are accepted onto the waiting list. If you have not applied to Foundation Housing but would like to come on the course you need to speak to an adult that works with you for example a social worker, youth offending team worker or college mentor. They will be able to help you apply for a place.

The course runs on a regular basis so you shouldn’t have to wait too long to get on the course. Once you have been accepted onto the course we expect you to attend all three sessions and you won’t get a certificate until you have done this. If you have any special needs we can work with you to make sure you can still do the course.
